Japanese lacquer storage vessel. Of circular form, the surface of the footed box and cover decorated in gold lacquer with overall grape vine (budo) motif on a black lacquer ground with red lacquer interior. A symbolic tradition inherited from China, grapes have an auspicious connotation because in China the grape is often used as an auspicious rebus, with the word for grape and crane (a well know symbol of longevity and beauty) being homonyms. Edo Period (1615 1868). 13" diameter x 9.5" high.
