Detail from a pair of painted sugi-do or sliding cedar doors. This pair is decorated in gesso paints with an image of a rabbit in a field of flowers. The rabbit in Japan represents, good fortune, advancement and cleverness. They are also messengers for the Gods so whisper a wish and they will hear with their bigs ears. They are also for good reason symbols of fertility. Late Edo.
