Large Japanese Jizai (hearth hook) of Keyaki wood (Japanese elm). The hook was used to suspend a cauldron of food over the Irori, or interior sunken hearth. The round hook with a simple flattened "cap" reminiscent of Daikoku's beret. Daikoku is the Japanese god of wealth who is always depicted standing on two large bales of rice which would ensure that the cauldron was always filled with food. Jizai of this size are rare and were probably owned and displayed by wealthy merchants. Meiji Period, Late 19th century.
