Japanese kuruma dansu (wheel chest) of keyaki (Elm wood) with two sets of sliding panels. The panels open to reveal large interior compartments. With original iron hardware. A good example with original finish and dark patina. Kuruma dansu were made to store bedding and household valuables. In case of fire, these wheeled chests could be easily rolled out of harm?s way. During the great Kanto earthquake in the early 19th century thousands of kuruma dansu were pulled into the streets of old Edo creating the first recorded traffic jam in history. For a brief time kuruma were banned within city limits. Meiji Period, 1868 1912.
