Chinese toggle carved in the form of two fish in a winnowing basket. The winnowing basket would often double as a dust pan symbolizing a gathering in of {good fortune]. The Chinese character for fish "YU" is pronounced the same as the Chinese character for "abundance" or "surplus" "YU". The fish symbol to symbolize the wish for "more" " good luck, good fortune, long life and children. Because of its reproductive abilities, the fish also represent fertility in marriage. Two fish, or a pair of fish (shuang yu åé±¼), represent happiness in marriage. 19th century.
