Japanese woodblock print. Artist: Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892). Seal: Taiso. Publisher: Akiyama Buemon. Date: June 1887. Condition: Fine. Series: 100 Views of the Moon. Subject: Wu Tze-su. He was the younger son of the prime minister of Chu in ancient China. After his father and brother were murdered he was forced to flee. When he stopped to rest beside a river, alone and starving, a mysterious woman gave him food, then disappeared into the river. Later, when he regained power he threw an offering of gold into the river.
