A large Japanese Shigaraki ceramic charger by Shiro Otani. The charger with black lacquer infill to kiln fissures and cracks. Otani was born in Shigaraki in 1936. He studied at Kyoto Craft Institution. He has taught at many schools in Japan and USA and also designed and built a large anagama kiln at Arrowmont, Tennessee. His works are in the collections of Boston M.F.A., the Freer & Sackler Galleries and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. This platter was made while in Tennessee. In Japan a tomobako, storage box, was made and reads "Fired Large dish- Shiro" and with the artist's seal. The reverse signed in English "Shiro '84 Tennessee"
