Large Saneh (architectural panel) from the exterior of a Torajan granary (Alang). Constructed of heavy wood planks and carved in low relief with simple vertical and horizontal grooves, the raised boards with traditional geometric and auspicious patterns including five stylized buffalo heads. The ornamentation was meant to drive away evil influences; however, the buffalo is also a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Heavily weathered with lichen patina and traces of original pigments. Toraja, South Sulawesi Island.Indonesian Archipelago. Early 20th century. 46" high x 79" wide x 2" deep.
