Dayak roof ornament by the Kenyah or Apo Kayan people of Kalimantan, Borneo. Mounted along the peak of a long house's roof, the architectural ornament carved in the form of stylized Dragons, powerful totem animals of the afterlife and providers to the living. Part of a living tradition, these ornaments protect the home and its inhabitants from malevolent spirits. A nearly identical example from the same structure was recently purchased by the National Gallery of Australia, and is currently on view in an exhibition titled: "Life, death and magic: 2000 years of Southeast Asian ancestral art" .Early mid 20th century. 84" high x 113" wide x 11" deep.
