Japanese ranma (transom) of carved hinoki (Japanese cedar) with openwork depicting in panel 1 bamboo and pine, the pine symbolizing strength, as the pine never loses its greenery even in the face fo the fiercest winter, and the bamboo symbolizing empathy, as the bamboo bends with grace in the face of adversity only to stand fully upright once again. Panel 2 depicts both the bamboo and the plum, the plum symbolizing renewal as the plum loses everything only to be renewed with beauty at the first signs of spring. Meiji Period. (1898-1910).
