Japanese choba dansu (merchant's chest) made of lacquered Sugi (Japanese cedar). The upper section of the chest with a single top drawer spanning the full width of the chest below two sliding doors revealing an open shelf, below one drawer equal in the width of the paneled doors, and two equally sized drawers evenly spaced below, all alongside 4 stacked smaller drawers of different sizes. The bottom section with two paneled sliding doors, to the left one single open shelf, and to the right three unique sized drawers, and one with a key. A hidden compartment has been built into the interior vertical post between the drawers on the right and the empty space on the left. Meiji Period (1868-1912)
