A boxwood carving of a young boy sitting atop a three legged toad. The boy leans forward and forces the jaws of the toad open revealing a small articulated pearl within. Many legends feature the three legged toad. It was believed that toads lived to a great age hence they stood for longevity but they also had the power to swallow the moon (during an eclipse) and therefore represented unattainable wishes and desires. Here however, a young boy, representing progeny, wrestles with the toad forcing it to relinquish the moon within itâs gaping mouth thereby allowing wishes and desires to once again be granted to its owner. Early 20th c.
