Title: | TOGGLE WEDDING SHOES |
Inventory#: | VE17123 |
Size: | 2.00" x 1.50" x 1.25" |
Country: | CHINA |
Price: | $700 |
Simple Huang Hua Li (a rare yellow rosewood) burl carving of a pair of âweddingâ shoes with an embroidered âShouâ (long life) ideograph incised on the toes. The shoe (Hai-tzu) is a direct pun on the word for children and together with an embroidered ball and long life ideograph the pun was extended to read âHsiao hai-tzu yu shouâ or âmay your children have a long life. Carvings of shoes were often given on the occasion of a wedding in the hopes that the union would produce many healthy children. Toggles in the form of shoes were almost always called wedding shoes.
