A good drum toggle in hardwood with free rolling ball within the slatted sides. The drum heads carved to resemble lotus pods each with five articulated seeds of bone. The drum is always associated with festivals and merry making but also with exorcism. The loud banging was thought to chase evil spirits away and to welcome good fortune. In this case the lotus ends complete with articulating seeds imply a future filled with good fortune lived with many happy children. 18th c.
