Indian Bagh or wedding shawl from the state of Punjab. Silk embroidered on rust colored cotton ground. These were embroidered by both Hindu and Muslim women upon the birth of a child. Upon completion a ceremony was held and based on the quality of the textile marriage negotiations took place between families. The Bagh was then put away as part of the child's dowry and used again only at the time of the wedding itself. The use of Baghs ended abruptly shortly after the partition of India in 1947. Early 20th century.
