Large Japanese Jizai (hearth hook) of Keyaki wood (Japanese elm). The hook was used to suspend a cauldron of food over the Irori, or interior sunken hearth. The hook of simple "J" form representing the Japanese household God Ebisu. Ebisu was the God of Fisherman depicted holding a red bream and auspicious fish. Havingan Ebisu pot hook would ensure the cauldron was always filled with food. Jizai of this size are rare and were probably owned and displayed by wealthy merchants, with good patina and encrustations from smoke and heat of the hearth fire. Early Meiji Period, Late 19th century.
