Japanese woodblock print. Artist Taisho Yoshitoshi (1839-1892). Seal: Taiso. Publisher: Akiyama Buemon. Date: May 1888. Condition: Light stain in center. Otherwise fine. Series: 100 Views of the Moon. Subject: A poem by Abe no Nakamaro. Nakamaro (701-770) was a scholar and poet who went to China to study and remained there the rest of his life. One story maintains that Nakamaro was sent to China on a mission by the Japanese emperor and was left to starve to death on a roof top by the Chinese emperor. He bit his finger and wrote in blood the folloing poem: Behold, the moon now rises The self-same moon the people fint at Kasuga, my home, appearing from behind Mt. Mikasa.
